A Truth Journal: XL Keystone Pipeline: Why Should America Take All The Risks and No Benefits?

XL Pipeline Protest

A Truth Journal: XL Keystone Pipeline: Why Should America Take All The Risks and No Benefits?: From Denny:  Once again greedy Big Business seeks to hang the American taxpayers with all the liabilities - while they make billions in profits, free to walk away when it goes bad.

The XL Keystone Pipeline is a huge boondoggle that comes out of Canada.  Apparently, the Canadian firm, TransCanada, along with some American energy partners sum up their business mantra in one chant, "Let the Americans pay for it!"

Our State Department has been on a fool's errand writing up a study on the impact on America's environment, concluding it would not be a problem, in order to act like they are satisfying the environment folks.  As usual, everyone rivets their focus upon the distraction, taking their eye off the obvious.

Astronomy: Tonite Trio Saturn, Moon and Star Spica Triple Threat

CREDIT: Starry Night Software
From Denny:  Does this month get any better?  We have a Super Moon on Saturday too.  Tonight, 3 May 2012, is a special treat for skywatchers about an hour after the sun sets.  Look up in the sky and you will get the special eye candy treat to behold a rare beautiful sight: a triple conjunction of the planet Saturn, the bright star Spica and our moon.

Astronomy: Sky Watch Biggest 2012 Super Moon Saturday

Washington Moonrise
Photo by Tim McCord in Entiat, Washington on 19 March 2011

From Denny:  Look up in the night sky this weekend for the most awesome extra-large and extra-bright moon viewing for the entire year of 2012.  The spectacular Super Moon will be showing off its size and brightness on 5 May 2012 at 11:35PM EDT.  It will swing in closer at 221,802 miles (356,955 kilometers) from Earth.

Why will the moon appear to be so large and bright?  Turns out this month's full moon also coincides with the time when the moon is closest in its approach to Earth, called the moon's perigee.

Another factor for this Super Moon show is because the perigee in this month will be the closest to Earth of any for this year, varying only by three percent.  How is that so?  According to meteorologist Joe Rao, Space.com's skywatching columnist, "it happens because the moon's orbit is not perfectly circular."

How much brighter will the Super Moon be this month?  Try an extra 16 percent brighter than average.  Now that makes for great skywatching, even with the naked peepers (eyes).

Awesome Space Station Videos of Glowing Earth Aurora

Göran Strand of Östersund, Sweden, took a panoramic photo of 25 Jan 2012 sights and wrapped it into a 360-degree composition titled "Planet Aurora."

From Denny:  Check out the glowing rim of the Earth as seen from the Space Station.  The sun was highly active exploding out a huge dose of electrically charged particles that spectacularly lit up our Earth's upper atmosphere.

These photos were assembled into a video from NASA's Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth and were taken during the period of 25 - 30 January 2012.  Usually, the photos are taken at the speed of one frame per three seconds instead of one frame per second as done here.  The result is a more leisurely video because it is a bit slower than the true speed of the space station.  It gives you that dreamy "you are here" feeling as you watch it.

Space: Strange Different Neighborhood Just Outside Our Solar System

IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) satellite

From Denny:  Just when you think "the grass is greener on the other side," as the proverb goes, well, in our celestial neighborhood, it just might be true.  This week scientists are reporting Life is a lot different and downright strange just next door beyond our solar system.

What they find odd is the amount of oxygen present.  Oxygen is actually dancing around like an all night party at a hip bar inside that solar system.  In fact, there is more oxygen there than in the immediate interstellar space (that vast region between stars).

Scientists have yet to determine the reason for so much oxygen.  The speculation for now is that perhaps oxygen is hidden in dust or ice.

From David McComas, Southwest Research Institute of San Antonio, Texas:  "We discovered this big puzzle, that the matter just outside of our solar system doesn't look like the material inside."

Total Lunar Eclipse Put On Intense Red Display, Photos: 10 Dec 2011

From Denny:  The 10 December 2011 total lunar eclipse was the last total lunar eclipse to be seen until April 2014.  At least we can view a partial lunar eclipse on 4 June 2012.  It was reported to be an intense red, putting on quite a show in the sky.  In fact, the type of red color was considered a rare treat.

Of course, when I went out to view it here in south Louisiana all I got was a completely cloudy sky.  It's time for me to move up to higher ground, like the mountains.  The Gulf Coast just doesn't cut it for proper skygazing. :)

From atmospheric scientist and eclipse expert Richard Keen of the University of Colorado: "During the lunar eclipse, most of the light illuminating the moon passes through the stratosphere, where it is reddened by scattering.  If the stratosphere is loaded with dust from volcanic eruptions, the eclipse will be dark. A clear stratosphere, on the other hand, produces a brighter eclipse."

Jon Stewart Interview: Why Fear Mongers Will Not Accept Science

Host Jon Stewart in the studio of The Daily Sh...                          Image via WikipediaLisa Randall                    Image via WikipediaFrom Denny:  Stewart interviews author and physicist Lisa Randall, of the new book "Knocking On Heaven's Door:  How Physics and Scientific Thinking Illuminate the Universe and the Modern World."

Stewart asks, "Why do we fight so hard to be illuminated by it?"  He is referencing the conservative political atmosphere that fears science unreasonably.

Randall offers up that perhaps the reason science is not so easily accepted is because "so many of the theories are far removed from what we see in our daily lives - and not necessarily the most intuitive."

She believes that if people would go beyond just human scale - where only technology can measure - that perhaps they will not be so afraid if they learn more about it and be more interested.

Stewart poses the question as to why are God and science incompatible?  Clearly, that is what so many people fear - like science will be 100 percent provable and certain, eliminating room for God.

The Social Poets: Millennium Prophecy Coming to Pass? Hurricane Irene Floods, Devastates America: Millennium Prophecy

After viewing the extreme flooding it does bring to mind those "Millennium Prophets" we heard on the news back in the late 1990's and early in 2000. Remember them? Better yet, remember the aerial maps depicting the flooding, showing much of the American Southeast under water and America split in two, divided by a widened Mississippi River?

We are definitely living in a time of geologic change. As a country we need to get serious about adapting to our changing world of melting polar ice caps, more severe weather, earthquakes and rivers changing course. Just this year alone the earthquakes have been so influential as to change the earth's axis by several degrees. That affects how water and weather moves across the planet.

Video: Viewing The Awesome Milky Way

From Denny: Talk about beautiful. A Norwegian photographer, Terje Sorgjerd, decided to hop on over to an island off Spain to film the Milky Way for this video. He says this area is the best place to observe the sky for the best views of the Milky Way Galaxy. It's definitely poetry in the sky. After viewing these incredible scenes I'm inclined to agree with him. Book me on the next flight to Spain! :) Happy Easter, everyone!

Why Is The Arctic Warming Faster Than Rest Of Our Planet?

Polar bears on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean...Polar bears in the Arctic near the North Pole with the USS Honolulu - Image via Wikipedia

From Denny: At what rate is the Arctic currently warming than the rest of the planet? Try twice as fast. And everyone in the scientific community has been trying to figure out why.

Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide warm up the climate while some aerosols like sulfate, from fossil fuel combustion, are a cooling influence on global warming, acting as a counterbalance.

Energy balance on Earth affected by aerosols and clouds

Arctic clouds and aerosols are thought to influence the loss of sea ice, carving out a niche as important roles in the energy balance on Earth. We all know what a cloud is but do you know what an aerosol is?

Super Moon Phenomenon: Gorgeous Illusion Worth Watching

Moon Photo from starryskies.com

From Denny:  Be on the look out for a gigantic moon hovering over you on the night of 19 March 2011.  The news outlets and stargazers are all excited to see this event.  The moon has not appeared this large since 1992.  This huge moon appears because the moon is closer to the Earth than usual in its elliptical orbit.  That closest approach in the orbit is called the perigee at about 364,000 km.  When the moon is orbiting farther away it's called the apogee at about 406,000 km.  Tonight the moon will be orbiting at about 221,567 miles (356,577 kilometers).  The average distance between the Earth and the moon is about 238.000 miles (382.900 km).

Huge moon 30 percent brighter tonight

Of course, the astronomy killjoys like to inform the romantics among us that this huge moon is just an illusion.  An illusion you say?  Prove it.  The moon will appear 30 percent brighter in the sky and about 16 percent larger - though your brain will swear it's bigger than that when low on the horizon. It's an optical illusion and it's your brain that is tricked - or so the science guys say.

The Moon Illusion.

Scientists, being the Big Namers that they are, call it The Moon Illusion. Rather clever like when the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia paid $100,000 for a marketing firm to name their upscale coat and tie restaurant.  The settled on the name:  The Restaurant.  Call me old-fashioned but I'd demand my money returned after that farce. :)

Well, the science guys don't really have a definitive answer as to why our brains are tricked into believing the moon is larger when the reality of the measurements say it isn't so.  They do have a couple of Just Supposing Ideas as to why this optical illusion occurs.

Ebbinhaus Illusion theory

One possibility is when the moon is low on the horizon we have plenty of hills, houses, even trees in the landscape to which we can compare its size.  However, when the moon rises high in the sky it does look isolated and nothing close by for comparison.  Here goes another name: the Ebbinghaus Illusion.  This is where objects of the same size give the appearance of being different sizes when they are placed in different surroundings.  After all, most of what we judge in life is in perspective to the surroundings of which we compare it.

Perspective

Another idea is that when we view the moon against objects in the foreground that we already know are far away from us, our brain starts running away with this comparison: "Wow! That moon is even farther than those trees and I know those are really far away. Even though the moon is far away it sure does look big.  In fact, that Super Moon must be huge!" (Works for me.)

Legend of the Super Moon

Natural disasters like earthquakes, unusually higher and stronger tides and beach erosion, along with human mayhem have been linked as legend to the Super Moon event.  The natural disasters might make sense as the moon is closer in orbit and exerting more gravitational pull on the planet than normal.  However, the science guys seem to think it's no big deal and will be minimal.  Tell that to the folks in Japan still encountering 6.0 and above aftershocks, to the tune of several hundred now, since their earthquake and tsunami just one week ago  Hopefully, they will not experience any more Mother Nature mayhem during the Super Moon.

Optical illusion or not I've come to the conclusion the brain is a natural romantic so give it up and just enjoy the cosmic show tonight!

Memory Tricks For Your Brain: Visualizing

From Denny: When you are a student there always seems to be endless dates and quotes to remember. And you know you will probably never see those same inconsequential offenders ever again for the rest of your entire life - and that of everyone you know. :)

When I was a little girl I used to get yelled at for doing these short stories in my head to help me remember things. My parents thought me weird. OK, I even got yelled at in a play writing class when I was one of two juniors in a class with grad students. The professor was some miffed he needed two more bodies to fill the class or he wouldn't get paid that semester for the class.

So, he was no fan of the Undergrad Two and rode us constantly. He was thoroughly exasperated as to how I was not crumbling up wads of paper and throwing them in the waste can (pre-computer days) or thoroughly frustrated while going through the supposedly torturous writing process.

I told him I write in my head. He looked at me like I was from Mars. I told him when the movie was finished in my head, after re-writing the scenes, then I would put it down on paper. And I did. He liked the little one-act play and was forever silent on what to him was a very foreign and unorthodox writing process.

I sure do love technology. It's as if I was born for tech. The keyboard can almost keep up with my flying fingers and rapid thoughts. However, since I'm a right-brained type who figured out how to live in a left-brained world, I also know there are a lot of left-brain types who struggle with visualization. It's downright torturous for them.

You might be one of those people who never learned well or easily how to do this for yourself. While I don't expect you to write a movie in your head, you may find this short video quite useful for improving your memory under pressure.

Right-brained people can profit from this video as well.  You might be someone who thinks in pictures but has problems sounding coherent in a left-brained environment.   This process can help organize your thoughts to come out of your mouth in a more efficient way for people to be able to relate to what you are discussing.

You probably already know about how to take a word or phrase you want to remember - but it's so damned dull your brain starts to snooze - so you have to come up with a memory trick to make it exciting for your brain to retain it. This video shows you the basic process to get going on it. The rest is up to you to experiment with it, adjusting it to your personality to create a great fit. Have some fun and Happy Writing In Your Head! :)

Music: Training Your Brain to Concentrate Better

From Denny: We all love music. There is some music that the brain really likes. When you soothe the emotions to quiet down, the thoughts focus better. The trick is to hit it just right that you don't get so relaxed you want to sleep. :) You want to hit that meditative level where you get into the zone of clearing clutter from your mind and can easily do that problem-solving at a faster rate.

And, if you really want to boost your memory power, pull out that frankincense essential oil and take a whiff. You can also place it in a bath with some almond oil. Almond oil is closest to the natural oil of human skin.

Take a listen and see how music can train your brain to think better.

Surprise: Formerly Bald Mice Show How To Regrow Hair?

Stress hormone study stumbles upon possible hair loss cure

From Denny: Imagine yourself a researcher studying stress hormones when you stumble upon a cool discovery for the possible treatment of hair loss. The scientists were working with some genetically engineered mice that often develop head-to-tail baldness. Their balding fur is the result of overproducing a stress hormone.

This experiment at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Veterans Administration actually was not focused upon hair loss. They were studying a particular chemical compound that blocks the effects of stress on the colon.

The mouse story

This discovery was one of those happy surprises that occurred after treating the Formerly Bald Mice with the compound for five days. The bald guys were returned to their cages where they frolicked with their furry mice brothers from a control group.

Researchers left the bald mice to their fun for a good three months before they revisited them to conduct additional experiments. What they found was nothing short of amazing. It was a good thing the Formerly Bald Mice had ear tags to identify them because that was the only way to distinguish them from their control group mates. All the mice, known as Formerly Bald Mice - who are, coincidentally, not a rock band, had regrown their fur on their heads and backs.  They  looked as healthy as any other Regular Joe mouse.

From Dr. Million Mulugeta, co-director of the pre-clinical stress biology program at U.C.L.A., looked inside the cage and wondered why the bald mice weren’t there: "I asked my colleague, 'How come these mice aren’t distinguishable from the others?' We went back to our data log, and we realized all the mice had grown hair. It was a totally unexpected finding."

This discovery was reported this week in the online medical journal PLoS One.

How the medical community received the news: dermatologist Dr. Melissa Piliang

How was their finding received in the medical community? Looks like mixed reviews from dermatologists and hair-loss researchers. Some, like Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, caution that the findings of a mouse study may not apply as easily to humans. She does say these results may arouse more interest in studying how the role of stress might affect human hair loss.

"We’ve certainly seen patients whose hair worsened when they are under a lot of stress. But what we don’t know is whether some of this genetic hair loss is particularly affected by stress. I think it’s hopeful for future research and treatment," she stated.

Dermatologist Dr. George Cotsarelis

Another consideration, according to Dr. George Cotsarelis, chairman of the dermatology department at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is this research may only be applicable to stress related baldness. This kind of baldness may stem from one-time events and not be useful as treatment for genetic baldness, saying, "It’s difficult to say that it’s going to lead to a new treatment."

Formerly Bald Mice researcher Dr. Mulugeta

Circling back to the Formerly Bald Mice researcher, Dr. Mulugeta, he said he is "hopeful the findings will lead to new avenues of hair-loss research."

With a discovery this astounding, you know the researchers just had to repeat their experiment several times to verify it. Read that as "I can't believe my eyes!" from the science guys.

Since they had ignored the original Formerly Bald Mice for three months they wanted to test the new groups to see just how fast the original mice actually regrew their fur. Turns out as they were treated with tiny doses of the compound for five days, just like the first mice, and they were able to regrow their fur in just a few weeks.

Experiments to see if prevention was also a cure for hair loss

Researchers tried yet another experiment by injecting the young mice before their hair fell out. What happened? Those mice never went bald. What researchers took away from that is the suggestion this compound is not only great to help regrow lost hair but also prevent age-related hair loss. Definitely a good day at the science office.

Mice only live for about two years. Scientists decided a long term experiment of four months was in order to observe if this treatment had a long-lasting effect. It did - and after only one series of treatments. No other treatments were necessary. The Formerly Bald Mice kept their fancy new hair and the young guys never did go bald even as they aged. Another good day at the science office.

Current human hair loss prevention treatments

Current human treatments for preventing hair loss require constant applications. The major treatments are minoxidil which is sold under the brand name Rogaine and finasteride which is sold as Propecia. And neither of these treatments have the dramatic effect of what has resulted in this mouse study.

Hair growth cycles are different in mice and humans so a treatment for humans may still be years away.

Says Dr. Mulugeta, "We are at the early stage of the work. We have a very strong observation but we don’t know whether this effect could be seen in humans. How does it act? All of these things have to be worked out, but we intend to follow through."

Science specifics of the experiment

For the science geeks here are the details about that stress hormone: the mice had been genetically altered to overproduce corticotrophin-releasing factor, abbreviated to CRF.

Researchers injected the mice with a peptide called astressin-B which was used to block the action of CRF. The whole idea of the original experiment was to measure how well the peptide could inhibit the effects of stress on the colon. It never was about researching how to regrow hair yet that is exactly upon what they happily stumbled.

Researchers still trying to figure out how this compound works to regrow hair or prevent baldness

Dr. Mulugeta says they still don't understand the mechanism of how the peptide triggered hair growth. They think it acted on the stress hormone receptors in the skin and near - or speculate maybe within - the hair follicle.

"The hair follicle in these mice is inactive. Something has turned on that cycle to put it back into an active phase, a hair-growing phase."

More unexpected benefits of this compound

Dr. Mulugeta also commented that this agent went beyond preventing hair loss. It also affected their skin pigment. What that suggests is the compound just might have the potential to put the hair color companies out of business. The compound affected hair color, including gray hair. Order me up this stuff immediately! :)

"The evidence to show that hair loss is not a permanent loss is shown very strongly in this study, and that by itself is very important. The antagonist really triggers a mechanism that covers a lot of biological phenomena, including hair growth and hair color. We certainly intend to continue the research."

Balding men all over the world - and women getting their first gray hairs - just might be only too happy to fund his research.
