Beautiful Illustrated Quotations: 3 Joy Quotes: How Does Practicing JOY Bring Order and Harmony Into Your Life? Also, Joy Contagious Lip-Syncing Cop Viral Video

Beautiful Illustrated Quotations: 3 Joy Quotes: How Does Practicing JOY Bring Order and Harmony Into Your Life? Also, Joy Contagious Lip-Syncing Cop Viral Video: From Denny:  Have you ever noticed that when you are filled with Joy that your whole world is suddenly harmonious and everything just falls into place?  Joy is contagious too.  When you feel good, everyone around you feels good too!

While not everyone is called to enter into the decades long rigorous training to become a mystic for the benefit of humanity, a lot can be learned and practiced in everyday life to better enjoy life's journey.  Practicing Joy is practicing healthy spirituality, regardless of religion or no specific religious preferences at all.

Joy is a central principle for the human spirit.  Joy sustains us through life's sorrows   and disappointments.  Joy acts as a counter balance while climbing out of depression or grief, dealing with past trauma and the ensuing PTSD, keeping us from sinking down further into negative emotions and thoughts.  Joy is important to safeguard not just our mental, emotional and spiritual health but it has a direct positive benefit upon our physical health too.

Adults often develop habits that steer away from Joy.  Babies laugh hundreds of times a day.  How much have you laughed out loud today?  How much have you laughed in the past month?  Do you find your world crumbling around you, feeling out of sorts and grumpy, thinking limiting thoughts, focused upon how little is going your way? ... read more

A Truth Journal: POW Bowe Bergdahl: 8,000 Afghan-Iraq War Deserters. Why Is America Attacking THIS One?

A billboard calling for the release of U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, held for nearly five years by the Taliban after being captured in Afghanistan, is shown in this picture taken near Spokane, Washington on February 25, 2014. REUTERS/Jeff T. Green

A Truth Journal: POW Bowe Bergdahl: 8,000 Afghan-Iraq War Deserters. Why Is America Attacking THIS One?: From Denny:  Maybe the headline should be:  "Do Terrorists Win?  The Perplexing Vicious Bullying of POW Bowe Bergdahl."  For almost two months I've been working to write this post but have found myself shocked, dismayed, downright apoplectic - and practically speechless - at the savage, malicious, downright evil attacks against Bowe Bergdahl.  So much for the loyalty to the American philosophy of "Leave No One Behind."  In this case it should read: "Leave No One Behind Unless It's Convenient To Use Them For Political Advantage [2016 election] And Avoid Prosecution For War Crimes."

Yes, I am still that furious at the attackers of a returning POW who experienced pure Hell for a very long five years.  So, I took a serious time out to watch before commenting to see how things played out since I knew it was the political hacks - and - highly suspect - most likely some very guilty platoon mates from Bergdahl's outfit - who were driving these attacks...

A Truth Journal: WTF? These two Vietnam War era veterans are interviewed on the Daily Show, revealing how absolutely ridiculous is the "leadership" at the Pentagon.  Is it any wonder we have the pompous a$$e$ installed at the helm of the NSA and its ensuing outrageous mass global surveillance for the past two administrations?

A Truth Journal: Govt Shutdown: Venzuelan Chicago Marathon Runner Delivers True Grit Congress Does Not: From Denny:  As the government shutdown has rippled through the global economy for two weeks now, anger is growing exponentially.  There really is nothing worse than selfishness and greed taken to the level of excess, rudeness and insensitivity to the plight of your neighbors.

To not take into consideration how the lives of others would be harmed by the political action of closing a huge government like America displays the height of hubris on steroids.  There will be repercussions come election day.  The American public will not just move on and forget how they and their families got screwed over by national politicians on a joy ride at our expense...

A Truth Journal: Jon Stewart Hammers Vet Affairs Failing to Break 1 Million Claims Logjam: From Denny:  While other equally pressing news stories push to the front of the public's attention - like Israel attacking idiot terrorist-supporting Syria and the tragic Boston marathon bombing by less experienced terrorists - the very soldiers who fought America's terrorism wars are told to wait for help by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

Granted the VA does process around one million claims a year, all this while in the midst of trying to change over from an outdated dinosaur 1970's paper culture and advance into the digital age.  Currently, they are looking at another two years before believing they will have arrived in said digital age.  Let's get real; multiple that by ten and the estimate might be near accurate.

After all, your brain is geared up to engage with technology and suddenly finds itself in total withdrawal.  And, it's a good thing that humor was created.  It's the best weapon in the human arsenal for survival.

I went off the grid for three days - and hot sweaty nights - during the very long week of Hurricane Isaac...

The Social Poets: What Obama and Romney Should Be Talking About: These 2 Sick Little Girls: From Denny:  It's time to stop the madness along with the childish political campaign bickering.  Americans don't want to hear it anyway.  There are bigger issues at stake like the lives of these two seriously ill little girls from Utah, Natalie and Alice Fish.  In light of what this one American family is enduring should shame all the national politicians who are so self-absorbed they have not stopped long enough to notice.

I'm so disgusted with the 2012 election's childish name-calling tone and enabling media encouraging it that I change the channel constantly.  As a respite yesterday I went up on my page at Google + to catch up on those who friended me.

Well, it turned out these little Fish girls' parents friended me (that's a link to their Google+ page).  It's a good thing I always take the time to read a profile page or I might have missed this struggling life drama of a middle class family.  These little girls are real troopers and have been living in and out of hospitals since they were born.  Their parents are to be commended for going the distance with not just one child but now two with this rare problem.

Somewhere along the way the truth has been buried.  Yet scandal after scandal emerges from the Obama administration while Romney stumbles with international gaffes.  All this explains why the polls reveal two-thirds of America thinks we are on the wrong track.

Dennys Funny Quotes: Calling In Sick To Your Boss: 15 Funniest New Excuses

Claiming your young daughter stole your car is just one of many bizarre excuses to miss work.

Dennys Funny Quotes: Calling In Sick To Your Boss: 15 Funniest New Excuses: From Denny: When you don't feel like going in to work, pull out your little Black Book Of Funny Excuses. Well, there is a new edition in town since a career survey was conducted.

During the colder weather of autumn and winter most people call in sick due to illness like colds and flu. Illness accounts for 39 percent of employees missing in action, according to the survey.

But then there are the creative types who just want an excuse to spend more time with their families. Others just want to spend more time in bed because the weather is too crappy to deal with. Or the procrastinators realize they need to get in some last minute holiday shopping.

So, what hilarious excuses are this generation of employees offering up as savory mind candy to their bosses? If I were their boss I would give them the day off just for creativity and the boldness to try to sell something so absolutely ridiculous.

National Day of Unplugging 2011 and Funny Tech Cartoons

Positron emission tomography image of a human ...Image via Wikipedia
From Denny: Yesterday, thousands of people connected by disconnecting as they turned off their smartphones, laptops, tablets and other techie toys. The goal is to leave them off for 24 hours and interact more with the people in front of you, you know, like your friends and family. Forget texting or social networks for at least 24 hours.

We all complain about reclaiming our time as our own. Well, our brains would sure enjoy more time unplugged as well. Remember that the right side of the brain needs more time for processing creativity but can't work as deeply or as much if the left side analytical is literally hogging all the memory space.

Actually, I forgot about this unplugging day but coincidentally, I just happened to be in tune anyway. I unplugged on Thursday and part of Friday because I could tell my brain needed a rest. It was time to decompress from too much technical input like statistics which we bloggers are forever collecting as we grow our blogs. After time away I always come back refreshed and can actually write my many posts in a shorter amount of time.

Tech people don't think twice about housekeeping their computers with diagnostics that clean out the temporary files and other junk. Why not give your brain - and your emotions - some time out as well to flush the unnecessary files? Consider unplugging as a regular routine every so often. Your stress level will drop significantly and your production will sky rocket to new heights.

This national day was started by a non-profit group of Jewish artists called Reboot. Their ongoing project is called the Sabbath Manifesto.

As much as I love science and technology I'm always doing something visual to give balance to the brain. Here are some technology funnies for your visual part of the brain to enjoy too:

Surprise: Formerly Bald Mice Show How To Regrow Hair?

Stress hormone study stumbles upon possible hair loss cure

From Denny: Imagine yourself a researcher studying stress hormones when you stumble upon a cool discovery for the possible treatment of hair loss. The scientists were working with some genetically engineered mice that often develop head-to-tail baldness. Their balding fur is the result of overproducing a stress hormone.

This experiment at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Veterans Administration actually was not focused upon hair loss. They were studying a particular chemical compound that blocks the effects of stress on the colon.

The mouse story

This discovery was one of those happy surprises that occurred after treating the Formerly Bald Mice with the compound for five days. The bald guys were returned to their cages where they frolicked with their furry mice brothers from a control group.

Researchers left the bald mice to their fun for a good three months before they revisited them to conduct additional experiments. What they found was nothing short of amazing. It was a good thing the Formerly Bald Mice had ear tags to identify them because that was the only way to distinguish them from their control group mates. All the mice, known as Formerly Bald Mice - who are, coincidentally, not a rock band, had regrown their fur on their heads and backs.  They  looked as healthy as any other Regular Joe mouse.

From Dr. Million Mulugeta, co-director of the pre-clinical stress biology program at U.C.L.A., looked inside the cage and wondered why the bald mice weren’t there: "I asked my colleague, 'How come these mice aren’t distinguishable from the others?' We went back to our data log, and we realized all the mice had grown hair. It was a totally unexpected finding."

This discovery was reported this week in the online medical journal PLoS One.

How the medical community received the news: dermatologist Dr. Melissa Piliang

How was their finding received in the medical community? Looks like mixed reviews from dermatologists and hair-loss researchers. Some, like Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, caution that the findings of a mouse study may not apply as easily to humans. She does say these results may arouse more interest in studying how the role of stress might affect human hair loss.

"We’ve certainly seen patients whose hair worsened when they are under a lot of stress. But what we don’t know is whether some of this genetic hair loss is particularly affected by stress. I think it’s hopeful for future research and treatment," she stated.

Dermatologist Dr. George Cotsarelis

Another consideration, according to Dr. George Cotsarelis, chairman of the dermatology department at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is this research may only be applicable to stress related baldness. This kind of baldness may stem from one-time events and not be useful as treatment for genetic baldness, saying, "It’s difficult to say that it’s going to lead to a new treatment."

Formerly Bald Mice researcher Dr. Mulugeta

Circling back to the Formerly Bald Mice researcher, Dr. Mulugeta, he said he is "hopeful the findings will lead to new avenues of hair-loss research."

With a discovery this astounding, you know the researchers just had to repeat their experiment several times to verify it. Read that as "I can't believe my eyes!" from the science guys.

Since they had ignored the original Formerly Bald Mice for three months they wanted to test the new groups to see just how fast the original mice actually regrew their fur. Turns out as they were treated with tiny doses of the compound for five days, just like the first mice, and they were able to regrow their fur in just a few weeks.

Experiments to see if prevention was also a cure for hair loss

Researchers tried yet another experiment by injecting the young mice before their hair fell out. What happened? Those mice never went bald. What researchers took away from that is the suggestion this compound is not only great to help regrow lost hair but also prevent age-related hair loss. Definitely a good day at the science office.

Mice only live for about two years. Scientists decided a long term experiment of four months was in order to observe if this treatment had a long-lasting effect. It did - and after only one series of treatments. No other treatments were necessary. The Formerly Bald Mice kept their fancy new hair and the young guys never did go bald even as they aged. Another good day at the science office.

Current human hair loss prevention treatments

Current human treatments for preventing hair loss require constant applications. The major treatments are minoxidil which is sold under the brand name Rogaine and finasteride which is sold as Propecia. And neither of these treatments have the dramatic effect of what has resulted in this mouse study.

Hair growth cycles are different in mice and humans so a treatment for humans may still be years away.

Says Dr. Mulugeta, "We are at the early stage of the work. We have a very strong observation but we don’t know whether this effect could be seen in humans. How does it act? All of these things have to be worked out, but we intend to follow through."

Science specifics of the experiment

For the science geeks here are the details about that stress hormone: the mice had been genetically altered to overproduce corticotrophin-releasing factor, abbreviated to CRF.

Researchers injected the mice with a peptide called astressin-B which was used to block the action of CRF. The whole idea of the original experiment was to measure how well the peptide could inhibit the effects of stress on the colon. It never was about researching how to regrow hair yet that is exactly upon what they happily stumbled.

Researchers still trying to figure out how this compound works to regrow hair or prevent baldness

Dr. Mulugeta says they still don't understand the mechanism of how the peptide triggered hair growth. They think it acted on the stress hormone receptors in the skin and near - or speculate maybe within - the hair follicle.

"The hair follicle in these mice is inactive. Something has turned on that cycle to put it back into an active phase, a hair-growing phase."

More unexpected benefits of this compound

Dr. Mulugeta also commented that this agent went beyond preventing hair loss. It also affected their skin pigment. What that suggests is the compound just might have the potential to put the hair color companies out of business. The compound affected hair color, including gray hair. Order me up this stuff immediately! :)

"The evidence to show that hair loss is not a permanent loss is shown very strongly in this study, and that by itself is very important. The antagonist really triggers a mechanism that covers a lot of biological phenomena, including hair growth and hair color. We certainly intend to continue the research."

Balding men all over the world - and women getting their first gray hairs - just might be only too happy to fund his research.

3 Videos: Free Health Clinics Serving Middle Class America Now, Republicans Party of No Answers

From Denny: This is a disturbing report. As foolish Republican strategists, conservative media and everyday citizen political hacks continue to fight the President on health care reform because their incomes are paid for by the insurance industry, middle class people with jobs have to resort to free health clinics for basic needs.

Free clinics were once the last resort of the poorest of the poor in America. Today, people call their local fire department and 911 calls for free help as much as overwhelming the emergency rooms of hospitals. Now the new trend is free clinics. Has America become a third world nation? We are a nation in distress and Big Business and the Repubican Party doesn't give a damn.

Americans are dropping their health insurance premiums in droves. No one can afford the $15,000 a year premiums just to own basic coverage. That doesn't even address catastrophic coverage if they were to experience a cancer diagnosis.

Nor does the health insurance industry any longer guarantee, even if rated up to higher premiums, that a person can get coverage because of pre-existing conditions, some as easy to treat as Type 2 Diabetes.

Doctors and nurses are already overworked across America from a stressed out medical system. Yet, here they are, a number of hardy loving souls, volunteering their "free" time to help offer health care to folks who can no longer afford health care premiums. Those $100,000 a year jobs are now only paying $30,000. With a 70% cut in pay across America (because of Big Business still continuing to outsource our jobs as no one has stopped the so-called "work visa" program), no one can any longer afford what they used to pay, yet the insurance industry keeps rocking along gouging the American consumer.

Top 10 Thinking Traps Exposed - How to Foolproof Your Mind, part 2

From Denny: Here is part 2 of Luciano's article about foolproofing your mind from thinking traps!

This is an excerpt:

"In the first part of this article, we focused on five traps that hinder our ability to think clearly. Now it’s time to complete the list and expose yet another five dangerous traps to be avoided. Let’s dive right in.

"6. The Conformity Trap: Everybody Else Is Doing It

"In a series of experiments, researchers asked students in a classroom a series of very simple questions and, sure enough, most of them got the answers right. In another group, they asked the same questions but this time there were actors posing as students, purposefully pushing wrong answers. This time around, many more students provided wrong answers based on the leads from the researchers’ assistants.

"This “herd instinct” exists — in different degrees — in all of us. Even if we hate to admit it, other people’s actions do heavily influence ours. We fear looking dumb: failing along with many people is frequently not considered a big deal, but when we fail alone we must take all the heat ourselves. There’s always peer pressure to adopt the behaviors of the groups you’re in.

"This tendency to conform is notoriously exploited in advertising. Businesses often sell you products not based on their features, but by showing how popular they are: since others are buying it in droves, why would you not join them?

"Conformity is also one of the main reasons why once a book makes into a well-known best-sellers list, it tends to “lock in” and continue there for a long time. People like to consume what “everybody else” is consuming.
What can you do about it?

"Discount the influence of others. When analyzing information, shield yourself from other opinions — at least at first. This is the best way to decide without being subconsciously swayed by popular opinions.

"Beware “social proof”. Always raise a flag when someone tries to convince you arguing primarily on the popularity of a choice, instead of on that choice’s merit.
Be courageous. Be willing to overcome obstacles and defend your viewpoints, despite their unpopularity. Don’t be afraid pointing out that the Emperor wears no clothes."

How Do You Cultivate Inner Happiness?

This is what I've featured today over at Beautiful Illustrated Quotations, my Quotes blog:

From Denny: What I so enjoy about quotes are two things: they are short, and therefore, easy meditations and also they often speak a facet of the truth in an amazing way! This is the first quote I've run across that discusses more than cultivating personal harmony or doing outward actions to help cultivate happiness. When you read between the lines what this author is talking about is acquiring a particular attitude toward self BEFORE you begin cultivating happiness - pretty cool take on it!

Tested: Bedside Brainwave Scanner Grades Your Ability to Sleep

From Denny: Here's something interesting over at Popular Science. People have trouble sleeping because of stress, worry about paying the bills, job loss, and now the extreme summer heat.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

"What's it like sleeping with a new device that scores your slumber quality, minute by minute, night by night?

A new device called the Zeo promises to help stamp out bad sleep and wasted time in bed, by bringing deep analysis of sleep patterns, formerly the province of professional sleep laboratories, into the home.

The Zeo comes in two parts: a bedside unit that looks like an alarm clock, with a handsome blue-on-black vacuum-fluorescent display; and a headband with a fairly low-profile black box mounted on its front. Strap on the headband before bed, and as you sleep, it wirelessly transmits data about your brainwaves to the bedside unit.

In the morning, the Zeo gives you a "ZQ" rating -- a score for your night's sleep ranging from 0 to 120. The concept is simple, but having a quantitative measure of sleep quality that you can keep an eye on over a period of time is a boon to those who want to keep an eye on their nights; one of the traditional problems with sleep, of course, is that you're not conscious to observe it firsthand."

Brain: Synchronized Brain Waves Focus Our Attention

From Denny: From the wonderful site Wired Science comes another interesting article about how the brain focuses our attention. Researchers are just now beginning to find out how our brain does it.

"Separate brain regions firing in unison may be what keeps us focused on important things while we ignore distractions.

A deluge of visual information hits our eyes every second, yet we’re able to focus on the minuscule fraction that’s relevant to our goals. When we try to find our way through an unfamiliar area of town, for example, we manage to ignore the foliage, litter and strolling pedestrians, and focus our attention on the street signs.

Now, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have discovered that the brain’s control center syncs up to its visual center with high-frequency brain waves, directing attention to select features of the visual world.

“It’s been known that the prefrontal cortex plays an important role in focusing our attention, but the mystery was how,” said neuroscientist Robert Desimone, who led the study, published in Science Friday. “Now we have some insight into how it has that focusing role — through this synchrony with our sensory systems.”

Brain: Our Culture Influences How Our Brains Function

From Denny: This is the first time a brain imaging study about this question of culture has been done. It was reported in the Psychological Science January 2008 issue.

What did the MIT researchers find?

People from different cultures around the world actually use their brains differently to solve the same visual perceptual tasks.

What are the differences in the cultures?

American culture values greatly the individual which in turn “emphasizes the independence of objects from their contexts.”

Asian cultures “emphasize the collective and the contextual interdependence of objects.”

Studying an impersonal brain scan is far different than behavioral studies researchers have done. Behavioral studies learned that memory and perception can be influenced by cultural differences. What scientists wanted to know: But can this be proven in brain activity patterns?

The Study

Organizing the team was John Gabrieli, professor at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. It was a very small study of 10 East Asians recently arrived in the USA (I guess so they would not be tainted by their now new culture) and 10 Americans. Researchers asked the subjects to make quick perceptual judgments while they were being scanned in an fMRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). An fMRI is a new technology that while a person’s brain is responding to a test, this machine starts mapping the blood flow changes in the brain, corresponding to the brain’s responses.

What were those mental tasks?

They were abstract stimuli like lines within squares. People were shown a progression of this kind of stimuli and then asked to compare to the last one given. In some of these trials, people were being asked for an absolute judgment of individual objects that were independent of context. Researchers accomplished this by asking if the lines were the same length regardless of the surrounding squares.

In other trials, researchers were looking for relative judgment of interdependent objects. They accomplished this by asking people to decide whether the lines were in the same proportion to the squares, regardless of absolute size.

What happened during these tests?

Different brain activation patterns were present for these two groups when performing these tasks. Apparently, Americans find it more difficult to make relative judgments. What happened to them is that these tasks activated the brain regions involved in attention-demanding mental tasks. Americans fared better in more culturally familiar absolute judgments and there was less activation of these regions.

East Asians proved to show the opposite tendency. They had to engage the attention-demanding part of their brains more so for making absolute judgments. Relative judgments were easier for them.

Trey Hedden was a lead author of the paper and also a researcher scientist at McGovern. Hedden remarked, “We were surprised at the magnitude of the difference between the two cultural groups, and also at how widespread the engagement of the brain’s attention system became when making judgments outside the cultural comfort zone.”

What else did they find that was significant?

The effect was greater in individuals who identified more closely with their culture. It was shown that a stronger cultural association presented a culture-specific pattern of brain-activation. A bit of how researchers went about being able to identify this was by the use of questionnaires. They asked about preferences and values in social relations – like do you think an individual is responsible for the failure of a family member? This helped gauge cultural identification.

Researchers have long wondered how these differences came to be

Gabrieli thinks, “Everyone uses the same attention machinery for more difficult cognitive tasks. They are trained to use it in different ways. It’s the culture that does the training. It’s fascinating the way the brain responds to these simple drawings, reflects, in a predictable way, how the individual thinks about independent or interdependent social relationships.”

Summary

Society does affect our brains; that much is established both in behavioral and now brain scan studies. Perhaps we need to be careful what we teach…
