Iceland Volcano Stops the World From Travel

From Denny: This crazy volcano in Iceland just keeps on giving. First scientists thought since the fissure was on the side of the volcano that it would not melt the glacier, causing massive flooding. Now? The story keeps evolving.

Now the fissure has widened, more ash is spewed into the air, so much ash that now people and their livestock have been evacuated from the surrounding areas. When we watch all this earth science drama on the news we think it won't affect us here in America. Wrong answer, folks. If this volcano does not quiet down any time soon there will be little or no air travel to Europe and back.

As it is for the past week, many travelers have been stranded, flocking to railway systems to get out. Who can hold out indefinitely for the volcano to stop spewing ash? Not too many people have that level of deep pockets to afford high priced hotels and the like for a month or more when they were only prepared to travel for a week. Well, at least they will have an exciting story to tell their grand kids years from now. Not too many people have seen such a volcanic spectacle - or been affected by it thousands of miles away - in their life time.

Check out the progression of the unfolding Iceland volcano story just from this past weekend in these few news clips which were only featured on the web and not seen on the regular news:

Video: Restaurant Foods Compost Great Wines

From Denny: This is pretty cool what they are doing out in California wine country! Maybe over the next decade or two we could be doing this all over America, saving our landfills. I just love it when people solve big problems in such a positive way! Wouldn't it be cool if suburban gardeners could go to one state or county location for composted dirt to put back into their yards and gardens for free?

Cool Video: Prez Obama Honored for Nobel in Sand Sculpture

From Denny: This is an Oddball segment from Keith Olbermann's Countdown show. Since it's October we get to watch folks in Lincoln County, Maine smash huge pumpkins. They put the several hundred pound pumpkins on a crane high in the air and then drop them onto decommissioned old police cars. Sort of gives you some satisfaction for that speeding or parking ticket you felt you never deserved from whatever decade... :)

What's really cool is the incredible sand sculpture a world renowned sand artist in India did on a local beach in Puri, India recently. The artist is Sudarshan Patanaik and his sculpture is four feet high, depicting President Obama's head embedded in a Nobel Peace Prize medal with an accompanying dove and a message pro Peace. This man is quite the artist! So glad a film crew went out there and recorded it; maybe he will do a painting or print photo to sell as posters? Beautifully done as well as a political statement art.

Video: Children Who Are Spanked Have Lower IQs

From Denny: This is an interesting study to back up other studies about the brain and development. From other posts I've done on the brain and children - and what is not mentioned here - is that when experiencing stress the brain is bathed in stress chemicals. Those stress chemicals inhibit the brain from learning. Abused children experience long term stress, long term batheing the brain in stress chemicals and so do not easily experience success in the world as adults.

Video: Surgery Offers Hope for Cerebral Palsy

"Cerebral Palsy is a brain injury that affects motor control, stiffening muscles and making movement difficult and sometimes painful."

From Denny: Profiled by NBC News is this adorable two year old little girl, Lili, who is dealing with cerebral palsy. Right now the doctors are predicting that some day she might not be able to walk at all. Why? Because with this condition the muscles can't keep up with the growth of the bone. As the bone grows it pulls on the muscle but the muscle can't stretch to accommodate the growth.

At St. Louis Children's Hospital they are pioneering a surgical technique to increase mobility by relieving much of the stiffness. This could turn out to be a life-changing surgery for those who qualify. Remember, this IS spinal surgery so not exactly a procedure without risk.

So far this spinal surgery that relieves the muscle spasms has helped over 1800 kids AND with a 100% success rate. Take a look at Lili's improvement after only five months since her surgery!
