Political Cartoons: Iceland Volcano Wrecks World Economy

From Denny: The world economy versus the Iceland volcano. Guess who wins... There are still people stranded trying to get home. The airlines figure it could take up to six weeks to sort out the millions of travelers and pilots and crews in all the wrong place as well as the screwed up flight schedules.

The airline industry in America lost about $20 million a day from the fiasco. The world industry lost $200 million a day from it. Moral? Never mess with Mother Nature as she can be fierce.

Icelands Volcanic Ash: Hurting Us And Our Planet?

From Denny: It's just plain stupid to try and go out in this ash mess. After all, there are fine glass particles you will be inhaling along with poisonous gases, poisonous because they are in huge amounts. Here are a few gases to consider as harmful in this situation:


Florine - in small amounts it's a helpful chemical in our toothpaste when it's diluted by parts per million. In large amounts it's very harmful to humans and animals because it's corrosive.

Silica - harmful to our lungs where it can stick, lodge and be difficult for our lungs to expel it, causing us to have trouble breathing.

Sulpher Dioxide - can lead to acid rain. Apparently, the reflective properties of it can also lead to cooling the climate.

At the moment, scientists believe this volcano's impact on climate change and the environment is minimal. The Big However is that situation could easily change if the volcano continues to spew ash for months or even years. Now there's a happy thought...

Air Jets and Volcanic Ash Dont Mix

From Denny: Check out this story about the effects of volcanic ash on jet engines. At least the airline industry has a healthy respect for Mother Nature when she's in a bad mood...

When you consider the corrosive effects of sulphur dioxide that's enough to convince me to keep the planes grounded! :)

If a jet engine can't breathe in order to function properly just think of what that volcanic ash does to our lungs. Great news clip with photos of caked on ash that melted as it hit the jet engines causing them to shut down while in flight. Two harrowing stories from the pilots and crew who lived to tell it. Iceland Volcano Stops the World From Travel

From Denny: This crazy volcano in Iceland just keeps on giving. First scientists thought since the fissure was on the side of the volcano that it would not melt the glacier, causing massive flooding. Now? The story keeps evolving.

Now the fissure has widened, more ash is spewed into the air, so much ash that now people and their livestock have been evacuated from the surrounding areas. When we watch all this earth science drama on the news we think it won't affect us here in America. Wrong answer, folks. If this volcano does not quiet down any time soon there will be little or no air travel to Europe and back.

As it is for the past week, many travelers have been stranded, flocking to railway systems to get out. Who can hold out indefinitely for the volcano to stop spewing ash? Not too many people have that level of deep pockets to afford high priced hotels and the like for a month or more when they were only prepared to travel for a week. Well, at least they will have an exciting story to tell their grand kids years from now. Not too many people have seen such a volcanic spectacle - or been affected by it thousands of miles away - in their life time.
