*** See the latest opinions from the nation's cartoonists about the BP oil spill in the Gulf. The situation is far from handled or finished, no matter what BP claims.
From Denny: Here in Louisiana and the rest of the Gulf coast region absolutely no one trusts the word of anyone who speaks for BP. They have lied to the President, to the American people and to the residents of the Gulf coast.
What's the latest insult besides lying TV ads trying to rebuild their reputation in America? Well, for one thing Americans are so furious with them that the company is seriously considering changing the name of its brand on its gas stations. Barring that they are also considering selling off their gas stations. "Ya think?" That alone is recognition they know they screwed up and can't get consumer confidence back.
The next big insult is BP is drawing down all the clean up operation boats and other equipment. Uh, hello, (waving from the Louisiana marshlands) there are still miles and miles of filthy Louisiana marshes in need of clean up of which BP has done little or practically nothing. Just ask Parish President Billy Nungesser. He will give BP and the media a piece of his mind, though I'm surprised the poor man has any mind left after this environmental fiasco. Billy has had to do a lot of screaming and complaining just to get the attention necessary to begin to get a few oil skimmers for the marshes. It's shameful how BP has treated America, our President and this region. Yet, here we sit - the Gulf of Mexico - with the largest oil reserve in the world of the richest deposit and BP continues to lie to us.
The latest out of the incoming CEO is that BP will supposedly stay forever and clean up the Gulf, all the while they have ordered in the majority of the clean up crews on the beaches and the clean up boats out in the Gulf. What's wrong with this picture? A lot.
Let's start with the cover up that has created a greater environmental disaster than the oil ever did. The spraying of dispersant, millions of gallons, broke up the oil. Sounds good, doesn't it? The problem is that all that accomplished was to send the oil under the surface and down into the middle levels and down on to the ocean floor. By dispersing the oil to all the levels of the ocean it has created far greater kill off of marine life than if the oil remained on the surface of the water. Had it remained on the surface then that wonderful retrofitted oil tanker, The Whale, from Taiwan could have easily scooped up the majority of the oil and most of this disaster would never have been that bad. Instead, by using dispersant the oil was in too small of particles that The Whale was unable to retrieve the oil at all.
We have millions of gallons of crude oil sitting on the bottom of the ocean and killing off the plankton that feed the marine life. This plankton also provide hatcheries for the young like the bluefin tuna - which may become extinct as a result of losing their spawning ground.
When the crude oil is not sitting on the ocean it gets disturbed by the currents and sent in waves to the beaches. The oil down there can also get disturbed by hurricanes. Most of all, it will eventually travel into the loop current and start going all over the world to contaminate the oceans of other countries. Any way you look at it we will have a huge dead zone at the mouth of the mighty Mississippi River and parts, if not all, of the Gulf of Mexico.
Surprisingly, BP still has contracts with the American government to supply the military effort. What's more strange is our government is still willing to allow these lying jerks to drill for oil anywhere in America. As it stands, BP has an oil rig out in the Gulf called the Atlantis that is three times the size of the Deepwater Horizon rig that blew up and created the current mess. Safety violations are rampant on the Atlantis and the word is it could blow any time as the situation is critical. Then BP has their refusal to properly maintain the Alaskan pipeline and so there are critical areas there that could be compromised any time.
With BP everything turns out to be a ticking time bomb. Why does anyone tolerate them? BP can walk away but the rest of us have to live here, whether it's Alaska or the Gulf coast. It's time sanity rule in Washington, D.C., and get serious about taking BP to the woodshed and take back our oil and our dignity while we are at it.
And while you are at it, Mr. President, lift the oil drilling moratorium because it's causing a huge wave of home foreclosures and bankruptcies across Louisiana and this region. You are killing the regional economy and have caused severe job loss. Make the Democrats look good in November and lift the moratorium.
Let's solve the various problems - instead of freezing everything on hold that solves nothing but create terrible hardships for hard working people: the middle class. The job of the federal government is to send out the safety inspectors to those oil rigs who are not in compliance with safety regulations. Even if you don't have enough properly trained yet, send out what you do have and hire all you need from the private sector. Then send BP the bill. Works for me; it should work for you.
What would work even more for me and the rest of the Gulf coast residents? How about collecting all those fines BP owes the federal government? What about the oil royalties BP - and all the other oil companies - owe the state of Louisiana that the corrupt people at MMS put into their own wallets or put back into BP's coffers?

Giant Asteroid Threatens Earth In 170 Years
*** Crank up the planet asteroid defense system because Earth is expecting an asteroid impact soon - by astronomical time.
An artist's impression of what an asteroid impact with Earth might look like - photo from Newscom
Hollywood Asteroid Destruction Movies
From Denny: And you wonder where Hollywood gets these scary ideas for their movies. There's a new study out suggesting Earth might get hit by a giant asteroid in 2182. So, folks, that gives us about 170 years and a number of generations to get our proverbial act together to figure out how to destroy it, derail it off a collision course or evacuate the planet. Of course, that's if it hits at all. I do wish these guys would make up their minds. Is the human race scheduled for extinction or isn't it?
Scientists, being the annoying beings they know how to be, they are alarmists while they are also double speaking us about how unlikely it is that this giant asteroid will slam into Earth. Don't you just want to chick slap these guys into another time zone for the way they jack up your emotions and then deflate them like some helium balloon?
The official glamorous name of this giant asteroid
What's this giant asteroid's name? It's a terribly exotic one: 1999 RQ36 and it sounds like something off a Formerly Known As Prince music album. So now fading rock stars are naming killer asteroids?
The odds of impact
Well, the Vulcan Spock look alikes in the science world have declared this giant asteroid only has a one in a 1,000 chance of truly smashing into Earth. Thanks, guys, I feel so reassured now. The co-author of the study, MarĂa Eugenia Sansaturio of the Universidad de Valladolid in Spain, says half of the risk calculated corresponds to what are potential impacts in the glorious year of 2182. Listen, folks, we still have to live past 2012...
Sansaturio and the study team said they employed mathematical models to determine the risk of this asteroid impacting Earth as far in the future as 2200. What they discovered from the model is there were two opportunities for this possible collision in 2182.
More about their research is detailed in the science journal Icarus.
How big is this asteroid?
Just how large is this giant asteroid? It measures about 1,837 feet across which is about 560 meters. The National Academy of Sciences says in a recent report that a space rock of this dimension could cause widespread devastation at the impact site. "Ya think?"
This giant asteroid has been tracked by scientists through as many as 290 observations and 13 radar surveys like a pack of FBI agents watching a house of prostitution. Yet there is still some uncertainty because of the small influence it gets from the gentle push of the so-called Yarkovsky effect.
The Yarkovsky Effect
What's the Yarkovsky effect? Glad you asked because I didn't know it either. Of course, it was named for a Russian engineer (I.O. Yarkovsky) who talked about this effect way back in 1900. He described how an asteroid gains momentum from thermal radiation that it emits from its night side. After several hundred years go by, this effect's influence on an asteroid's orbit could be monumental.
The erratic asteroid orbit makes it difficult to pin down odds
Back to the study team in Spain as they figured out that up until the year of 2060, Earth's chances of getting hit by this giant asteroid is minimal and downright remote. That's so comforting, guys. However, the odds start increasing by a magnitude of four by the year of 2080 because the the orbit of the asteroid brings it closer to hanging out near Earth.
Those scary odds of impact start dipping down as the asteroid moves away from Earth. Then those odds rise again in 2162 and 2182 as the asteroid's orbit swings back toward Earth. It's an erratic orbital dance and therefore difficult to know exactly the odds of impact. "The consequence of this complex dynamic is not just the likelihood of a comparatively large impact, but also that a realistic deflection procedure (path deviation) could only be made before the impact in 2080, and more easily, before 2060," Sansaturio said. "After 2080, it would be more difficult to deflect the asteroid." Read that as we are screwed on this planet if the mathematicians are correct.
"If this object had been discovered after 2080, the deflection would require a technology that is not currently available," Sansaturio said. "Therefore, this example suggests that impact monitoring, which up to date does not cover more than 80 or 100 years, may need to encompass more than one century. By expanding the time frame for potential impacts, researchers would potentially identify the most threatening space rocks with enough time to mount deflection campaigns that are both technologically and financially feasible," she said.
Tell your children's children what to expect or deal with asteroid now
And there you have it. Make sure to leave a journal for your descendants so they can be scared the hell out of their minds too. Meanwhile, I'm taking a trip to Area 51 to find me some aliens with asteroid busting technology. Being proactive is the way to go. Let's go blast some giant asteroid out of the sky!

BP Oil Spill Cartoons - 24 July 2010
*** Check out some stellar cartoons this week whiplashing BP over the Gulf oil spill.
From Denny: Of course, the arrogance of cavalier CEOs is easy fodder for the cartoonists and their mighty pens. The mocking and sarcasm dripped heavy this week... :) Check out their latest political humor and opinions about the ongoing environmental disaster.
Everyone here on the Gulf coast is practically holding their breath and wondering how long the temporary containment cap will hold on the damaged well head. While we wait we might as well laugh about it as the gallows style of humor has taken hold of America in recent months because of the economy and this oil spill.

Popular Funny X-ray Pin-Ups Calendar: Stripped to the Bone
*** Definitely this is a fit for the strange but true category and amusing too.
Views to date: 14, 158. Thank you!
"Miss September" wears stiletto heels as she strikes a pose for the Eizo X-ray pinup calendar.
From Denny: It seems there is always someone thinking up new ways to shock us. This year's most provocative pin-up calendar features X-rayed not X-rated girls. Yes, you heard me right. Bizarre but true.
This 2010 pin-up calendar is the weird brain child of a German advertising agency called Butter. The idea was to promote Eizo's high-precision displays for medical imaging so they used X-rays to shoot the pin-up models.
The Butter Agency declares that "pin-ups are more often found in auto garages rather than in medical offices." I'll say. "Eizo breaks this taboo," Butter boasts. "This pinup calendar shows absolutely every detail."
Their ad promotion made quite a splash on the Coloribus ad archive recently. Ever since these bizarre pin-up photos have been making their rounds on the Internet like the bizarre version of a Playboy centerfold.
Apparently, this calendar is a promotion only kind of thing and is not available as an actual calendar though certainly plenty of guys have tried to procure one. When several emailed the company: "Sorry, you can't get it here. However, we appreciate the impact it has had on Eizo's U.S. brand recognition," the company wrote back.
What's next? First we have skeletal thin fashion models because of eating disorders and the beauty world's pressure to be too thin. Now we are gonna X-ray them too for display as pin-ups? Human sexuality has reached a new low for sure. :)
Here is the entire weird but funny calendar. Maybe they should have put out this ad calendar during the Halloween season:
Miss January
Miss February
Miss March
Miss April
Miss May
Miss June
Miss July
Miss August
Miss September
Miss October
Miss November
Miss December
Coloribus ad archive
x-ray exposure - Frequently used CT scans may raise cancer risk
skeletal fashion models - Why so skinny? Many models are not yet 16
Fashion insiders fret over eating disorders, discuss promoting fuller figures

Are These Fossils The Earliest Traces Of Complex Life?
*** Check out what was happening on the Earth over two billion years ago as scientists discover new fossils to shed new light on how Life evolved here.
From Denny: Scientists are all a gaggle about some cookie-shaped fossils in the country of Gabon (Africa) that may date as far back as 2.1 billion years. This new find may prove to be the earliest known fossils that represent multicellular life. The Big However is that when you go that far back in Time these kinds of claims can get complicated.
2.1 billion years for multicellular life is one thing. Turns out that microbial life appears to go even farther back into the mists of Time to the tune of 3.45 billion years ago. Scientists base their claims upon the manner in which mats of organic material have been built up in the ancient sediment.
Until now, the science community equivalent of bragging in the Guinness Book of Records, was a 2 billion year old coil-shaped fossil called Grypania spiralis (of course). Size wise it is only centimeter in scale yet may be proved to be a giant form of bacteria or an algae creature.
Scientists know that about at this time of 2.4 billion years ago the Earth's atmosphere went into a transition and increased greatly in oxygen, allowing multicellular creatures to develop. Previous to that time? There appears to have been no oxygen in the air. Ouch! It was a toxic mix of greenhouse gases. It wasn't until about 2.1 billion years ago that there was a little oxygen - but it only made up a tiny percentage compared to today's atmosphere.
"This bacterial world was undergoing the greatest episode of climate change (known as the Great Oxidation Event) in the history of the planet: pumping out oxygen, drawing down carbon dioxide, slowly transforming the Earth into the world we know," according to Donoghue and Antcliff, University of Bristol who wrote commentary on this research.
These newly found fossils exhibit more evidence of structure. They measure as large as 12 centimeters, about 4.7 inches in size. "On the surface, the fossils resemble irregularly shaped cookies with split edges and a lumpy interior," the researchers, led by Abderrarazak El Albani of the University of Poitiers, reported to the media.
El Albani's team collected more than 250 fossils from Gabon. They charted their 3-D structure by placing the fossils through rounds of micro-CT scans. It was from this structure that researchers were able to realize the organisms built up through cell-to-cell signaling. They were not just deposited together as a microbial mat.
What scientists are hoping is for these little fossil cookies to shed some light of how life evolved from this ancient period before the Great Oxidation Event occurred. Yet another tiny piece of the great Life Puzzle and we all know what that means: lots of hard work ahead to fit all the pieces together to make sense of it.
The report was in the journal Nature.

From Denny: With the new and faster features offered by Blogger lately, I decided to go ahead and take the jump. All of my three food blogs are now neatly compiled into one blog: Dennys Food and Recipes.
For the past year I've been experimenting with small niche writing like the so-called internet SEO experts preach. As far as writing goes, I felt constrained in too small a space. Yes, I'm one of those kids who skipped coloring outside the lines in coloring books and took it to a whole new level. I colored whole murals on my bedroom walls. It sure beat the pedestrian mind-dull wallpaper my parents used to cover unsightly and uneven plaster walls in a 160 year old New England house. My father knew how to properly plaster walls since his father was a commercial and residential contracter among other talents - he just didn't want to go to the bother. So, I had my own solution.
I have my own solutions too for these many blogs and I'm combining several of them. What the statistics have proven over the past year is that once a generalist always a generalist. Roaming intellectually is fun for me and I like to bring home my finds for others to enjoy whether it's for mind food or just a good silly laugh.
The new large recipe blog is finished and is called Dennys Food and Recipes. You can find everything from pasta to chocolate to Louisiana food. There are recent food videos and food from other countries like the Olympics food from Canada. The Muffin Monday segments feature bed and breakfast inn recipes from primarily America and Canada to help support small business over Big Business. Supporting small business helps build up and stabilize the economy. It's small business owners who are the heroes of the economic world as they hire at least 70 percent of the workers in America. Supporting them to do well helps you!
