Super Moon in Clouds 2012 - Newfoundland, Canada |
From Denny: Forget what the main stream media put up for Supermoon photos. I found some superior ones over at flickr from both amateur and professional photographers. They also tell you how they constructed these photos or video from a series of photos. In this post are 49 photos and two videos.
And, yeah, I like to promote photographers so any info they provided with their awesome photos is posted here too so you can purchase prints or visit their websites. Most of these photos are All Rights Reserved, some are Creative Commons, some ask to be licensed for Getty Images. All have embed codes available for your blog or site. Be sure to click on the photos to take you to their flickr pages for more wonderful photography to enjoy!

May 5 2012
I like to share this small video clip/time lapse with you. It is not a perfect video due to some technical error of me when I shoot it :).. I moved the camera to a little bit different view. sorry about it. I hope you enjoy it as when I seen it in person this morning. The moonset / or the moon moved down quick to the horizon. Hopefully, I will able to capture a better video/time lapse tonight of the the super moonrise :) have a nice weekend.

Supermoon and Corona
The bright full moon of May 2012 above Rio de La Plata with a colorful corona around it.
This photo is the best representation of what I saw with my own eyes, a very beautiful scene.
To create this with the camera I had to take 3 exposures: one for the water, one for the moon and one for the Corona and then combine them.

Colors of the moon
Our eyes cannot see the moon’s true colors. While we normally see mostly shades of gray, there are in fact many subtle color differences. These colors are muted, but they do exist.
The colors are from different chemical elements on the moon's surface. Blue indicates high amounts of the element Titanium. Red areas have reduced amounts of titanium.
Dried lava beds, craters, and rocks all have subtle color differences that can be brought out with digital photo software such as Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. To enhance the colors in this photo I used Photoshop Elements and a filter by Topaz Labs.
Moon viewing tips....
The days on either side of first quarter phase of the moon are the best times for lunar observers. Sunlight comes directly from the right, casting long shadows that emphasize the lunar landscape. The rising sun casts the moon's topography in high relief.
Some of the moon's features are familiar from Earth such as mountains, plains, and valleys. However, similarities are deceiving. Lunar plains were not created by ancient lakes or oceans, but were formed by lava flows after impacts from asteroids.
The most distinctive feature of lunar topography are craters. Unlike craters of Earth, which are mainly caused by volcanic action, the moon's craters were mostly formed by the impact of meteors and asteroids billions of years ago.
Without water to erode them, these impacts are still visible. Although there are many impact craters on Earth, most have been eroded away, only detectable by geologic analysis.

Birds Silhouetted against SuperMoon
Went out to Humber Bay bridge tonight to shoot the moon. There were lots of birds over the harbour so I just waited patiently for them to fly in front of the amazing moon.

On Saturday May 5, 2012, the lunar perigee coincided with a full moon. This fascinating event occurs about once a year. At its closest point the moon will be 222,000 miles (357,000 km) from Earth, causing high and low tides to be slightly more extreme than usual. [Source: The Telegraph]
The exact numbers differ depending on who you source, but according to NASA the moon appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter. The scientific term for the phenomenon is “perigee moon”. Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon’s orbit. The Moon follows an elliptical path around Earth with one side (“perigee”) about 50,000 km closer than the other (“apogee”).
The best time to look is when the Moon is near the horizon. For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging Moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects. The last Super perigee Moon occurred on March 19th, 2011, producing a full Moon that was almost 400 km closer. [Source: NASA]

There was a Supermoon over Ireland on 5th May 2012 meaning the moon was closer in its orbit over Ireland at full moon than it ever usually is and therefore bigger in the sky. This photography was taken from Sandymount Strand of the supermoon over Dun Laoghaire and Salthill at approx. 10pm.

Super Moon, May 2012
It's the super Moon set in the morning of May 6, 2012. The Moon phase was peaked in May 5-6, which was 15% larger than usual for the closest distance to the Earth in the year. Shot by a Nikon D300, Nikkor AF70-200VR, TC17EII, to the longest end, about 510mm 35mm equivalent focal length. The distance to the tree is about 800m.

Los Angeles from 4th Street, Supermoon
There were a good dozen photographers hanging out on 4th Street the evening of the "Supermoon." I was in complete awe with how bright the full moon really was. I originally intended to underexpose it (so as to make out its surface features) but realized that an overblown round light-source in the sky would lend itself more to the "Supermoon" phenomenon. I was lucky in getting to frame the moon between some Los Angeles skyscrapers. This photo was the result of that effort.
